Die Südliches Afrika Initiative der deutschen Wirtschaft – SAFRI empfing am 08. Februar 2012 gemeinsam mit den Trägerorganisationen BDI und DIHK sowie 25 geladenen deutschen Unternehmensvertretern im Haus der deutschen Wirtschaft in Berlin den botsuanischen Staatspräsidenten Seretse Khama Ian Khama. Präsident Khama wurde begleitet von einer Delegation aus Regierungsvertretern, darunter die Minister für Wirtschaft, Tourismus, Bergbau und der Außenminister sowie botsuanische Unternehmer.
In einem Redebeitrag der Wirtschaftsministerin Dorcas Makgato-Malesu sowie der anschließenden Diskussion mit dem Präsidenten warb die botsuanische Delegation um die Aufmerksamkeit der deutschen Politik und Wirtschaft. Besonders hervorgehoben wurden dabei die Bereiche Finanzen, Bergbau, Energie und Tourismus. Darüber hinaus bewarb der Präsident das botsuanische Konzept der Entwicklungsknoten; Botsuana hat für die Bereiche Transport, Gesundheit, Diamanten und Innovation eigene sog. Hubs initiiert und erhofft sich dort konzertierte Schwerpunktsetzung in der Diversifizierung der Wirtschaft. Der Präsident bezeichnete die Bildungssituation als größte Herausforderung neben HIV / Aids im Hinblick auf die Fortentwicklung der Volkswirtschaft. Besonders kritisch äußerte sich Khama zur Situation im Nachbarland Simbabwe. Dem dortigen Präsidenten Mugabe bescheinigte er Verantwortungslosigkeit und bemängelte den politischen Willen der SADC-Staaten, hier kohärenter vorzugehen.

On the 8th February 2012, the Southern Africa Initiative of German Business - SAFRI in partnership with its supporting organizations the DIHK and the BDI as well as 25 invited German business representatives met with the Botswanan President Seretse Khama Ian Khama in the House of German Business in Berlin. President Khama was accompanied by a delegation of government officials including the ministers of finance, tourism, mining, the foreign minister, as well as Botswanan entrepreneurs.
With a speech by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcas Makgato-Malesu and the subsequent discussions with the president, the Botswanan delegation solicited the attention of the German government and industry. Particular attention was drawn to the sectors of finance, mining, energy, and tourism. In addition, the President emphasized the concept of development nodes in Botswana; in the areas of transport, health, diamonds, and innovation Botswana has initiated so-called hubs and hopes for concerted focus in these areas in the diversification of the economy. The President described the educational situation, in addition to HIV / AIDS, as the biggest challenge facing the development of the economy. Khama noted the situation in neighbouring Zimbabwe as particularly critical. He drew attention to the irresponsibility of President Mugabe and criticized the political will of the SADC countries for not coherently dealing with the situation.
